follow up from St Louis trip

We had a great visit with Aubrey’s new endocrinologist in St Louis yesterday. While I hate this disease and the fact that Aubrey will have to deal with this for the rest of her life, I am thankful that we have found a great endocrinology practice to manage her diabetes and support us through this. I think we found a good fit!

Thanks for the prayers…

heading to St Louis tomorrow

Tomorrow we’ll be at Children’s Hospital for a visit with a pediatric endocrinologist. Aubrey has had great care here in Springfield — but there aren’t any pediatric endocrinologists here. So they are sending us down to St Louis for a consult…and perhaps for this to become her regular doc. We’ve heard really great things about their program. We’re hoping and praying that this will be a good fit for her. Prayers for Aubrey are always welcomed!

weekend reflection…

Wow…what a fun weekend it was to have Amy Petty join us in our services. It’s always a joy to have her come and share her beautiful music with us. And the song she wrote to go with our series, Fearless…simply amazing. I woke up this morning singing…

I am fearless cuz I know you hear me

And I will give my hand to you, give my hand

I am fearless cuz I know you’re near me

And I will give my hand to you, give my hand

Thanks Amy for sharing your music with us!

Go show Amy some love…check out her website and her Facebook page.

a sweet child in Kenya

Tonight our family sponsored our first child through Compassion International.

Let me introduce you to Collins.

He’s 6 years old.

He lives with his mom and dad.

And with 6 brothers and sisters.

And he lives in Kenya.

I am really excited for our family to share in the life of this sweet boy. And for our kids to pray for him…and to write to him…and to learn how someone on the other side of the globe will be impacted because of their prayers, words and support.

amy petty’s coming back to RCC

Really excited that Amy Petty will be joining us again at RCC this coming weekend. She was here last summer…it’s always a wonderful thing to have her play and sing! She’ll be once again joining our worship team and sharing a couple of songs with us during all 4 services. If you’re local…don’t miss this weekend (Sat 5:30, Sun 8:00, 9:15 & 10:45)!

jdrf family retreat in STL

This past weekend we attended our first JDRF Family Retreat. Lynda’s parents came up from Joplin and stayed with the twins while Lynda and I took Aubrey and Colin to the St Louis Millennium Hotel for 24 hours of fun.

Aubrey and Colin went to the children’s activities while Lynda and I attended the parent sessions discussing various topics related to diabetes and diabetes research. Their weekend was filled with fun times: laughter, face painting, magicians, jugglers, pool time. And we received the encouragement of conversations with other parents who are walking in our shoes. I learned a ton…and really see hope for Aubrey as they continue to learn more about this disease and get closer to a cure.

With this being relatively new for us (just since November), we weren’t very familiar with JDRF. But coming away from this weekend, I believe in the work of JDRF and will look for various ways to support and promote this very important organization. I love that they did this for us as a family…the kids are already talking about going back next year.

Visit the JDRF website to learn how you can support the cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

fun with dad’s old phone…

It was a relatively normal weekday morning. Colin & Aubrey were at school. Our friend Karen was here visiting from Massachusetts. Lynda was doing routine things around the house. The twins were playing in Ethan’s bedroom having a great time, laughing and playing. Then it was naptime.

As Lynda was coming out from putting them down, she and Karen noticed that there was a police cruiser sitting outside our house. He wasn’t moving…and seemed to be looking for someone or something. As she began to see him walk up our driveway, Lynda met him at the door.

“Is there something wrong?”

“A 911 phone call was made from a cell phone in this area. We aren’t able to pinpoint it exactly but we can tell that it is coming from this street. Do you know if anyone is home at any of these other houses?”

Lynda talked with him for a bit. He mentioned that they tried to call the phone back but couldn’t reach anyone. And that the call was made 3 times. He asked if anyone had called from her phone… Both she and Karen checked their phones just to make sure nothing was accidentally dialed. Nothing.

The policeman left and Lynda and Karen were talking about how weird that was. And then…lightbulb.

“Do you think that E & A could have dialed 911 from that old phone of Matt’s?”

The kids had been playing with that my old Centro phone all week… taking pictures, playing with some of the apps. But it didn’t have a sim card and the phone wasn’t operative — except to make “Emergency Calls.”

Who knew that to make an emergency call from a non-operating cell phone, you don’t have to dial 911. You just have to hit the green send button!

And sure enough…3 sent Emergency Calls showed up on the phone.

Lynda ended up calling the police department. They had to come and take a report. Asked if they could talk to the kids…”um, they’re 3 and taking naps right now!” He accepted that and then went on his way.

And so a lesson was learned. We’ve now made sure that none of our old cell phones have batteries in them. And I’m just waiting to see if we get a nice little fine in the mail for 3 fraudulent 911 calls!

Really enjoying Matt Redman’s newest cd, We Shall Not Be Shaken. Great stuff… and the twins like to sing along too!

I’ve been following Shaun Groves and the Compassion team through all the relief efforts for Haiti. And this benefit concert is just another way to help support Compassion’s great cause as they continue their work in Haiti after this tragic event.

February 27th, two venues, streaming live on the web. Make a difference in the lives of the survivors. Your donation will lay bricks, feed, educate, clothe, heal and rebuild Haiti in Jesus’ name for many months to come. Please give.
